John Byrnes – President
John Byrnes is the owner of Express Employment Professionals in Charleston, SC and has served as the president of the South Carolina Staffing Association for the past four years. John has over 20 years of management and accounting experience working for large international Fortune 100 firms in both the U.S. and abroad before opening his Express offices in 2004.Under his leadership, John helped SCSA earn American Staffing Association Legislative Awards every year since 2009. In his role as president of SCSA, John has been very active in South Carolina’s Unemployment Trust Fund insolvency crisis and has worked with the Legislature there to help ease the burden this insolvency has caused businesses throughout the state.
John is also a member of the Express Employment Professionals’ Workers Compensation Focus Group. Since 2006, John has served on the board of directors for Christ Our King Stella Maris School in Mount Pleasant, SC and is a member of the Knights of Columbus. He attended Seton Hall University and is a graduate of Kean University of New Jersey.
Dottie Karst, CPC, CSP – Legislative Chair
Dottie joined Charles Foster Staffing as a manager in 1982, became Vice President in 1987, and has been the President and Owner since 1992. Located in Charleston, Charles Foster Company includes a Temporary/Staffing division, an Executive Search division, and a Government Contracting subsidiary. Very active in the community, Dottie is a strong advocate for the growth of women in business. She is a member of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce and the Center for Women, as well as many other business groups in the Charleston area. Currently, she serves on the board of directors for the South Carolina Small Business Chamber, the North Charleston Rotary Club, SCSA, and The Metro Club.
Bryce England, CTS – Ethics & Arbitration-Staffing
Bryce has been employed with Snelling Staffing Services of the Midlands for more than 10 plus years. Snelling Staffing Services is a full-service agency, placing temporary, temp-to-hire and career placements around the South Carolina Midlands. Currently, he is the Operations Manager of the Lexington Branch. Born in Marshalltown, Iowa, Mr. England moved to Columbia, South Carolina in 2000 to be closer to family. He is a Certified Temporary Specialist (CTS) and has been a board member of the South Carolina Staffing Association for the past three years.
Jan Cappellini, CTS, CSP – Past President
Jan has been an integral part of the staffing industry for the past twenty-four years. She started her career working as the Manager of a ‘one-size fits all’ staffing corporation in North Charleston. In 1993, she opened Alternative Staffing, Inc. to offer custom staffing solutions to local business from a small office on Remount Road. Jan has been a SCSA Board member for 15 years and has served two terms as SCSA President. She is very involved in the business community in lower South Carolina and has been a board member for the TWIB for over ten years, serving as Chair for the past two. An active Rotarian, Jan is a big supported the Communities in Schools program and a leader in fundraising for the Annual Round Ball Classic Basket Ball Tournament. Jan is a long-time advocate of the use of professionally affiliated staffing services and certified Recruiters. She is an aggressive proponent of SCSA Membership!
Katie Whitman, CPC – Coastal Regional Director
Katie, Executive Vice President of Dunhill Staffing Systems of Charleston, joined the SCSA Board in 2006. She is a graduate of Clemson University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing and received her CPC licensure at the 2006 Spring Conference. In her first year as a Recruiter, Katie was ranked as the #1 Rookie Consultant nationally and since then has been ranked the #1 Consultant for the entire Dunhill System for three years in a row. The Charleston office was also a Platinum Award winner from 2004 to 2007 and won a Roaring 20 Award in 2008 – an honor given to the 20 fastest growing business in Charleston on an annual basis. In addition to her involvement in SCAPS, she is active in the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. She is a graduate of Dale Carnegie Training and a member of the Leadership Charleston Class of 2006. In 2007, Katie was named one of Charleston’s “Top 40 Under 40,” an award given to the top 40 business professionals in the metro area, under the age of 40. In 2008, Katie was named SCAPS Member of the Year. Katie works in both recruiting and staffing for Dunhill of Charleston, and specializes in engineering, administrative, real estate/property management, and other various industries.
Melissa Gladden is the founder and President of the award winning and WBE Certified staffing company, Carolina Recruitment (CR). Her company’s mission is to help clients realize their goals with actionable staffing plans, giving them the flexibility to adapt to changing market conditions. CR’s staffing specialty is in light industrial, clerical and administrative support for general business and medical practices. With 13 years of experience, Melissa is an established leader in showing businesses how to strategically leverage their hiring systems to maximize ROI from their customized staffing solution. Melissa strongly believes in giving back to her community and dedicates her free time to supporting local initiatives. She is a devoted mentor to HR students, a guest speaker at the technical college on employment related topics, and serves on The Government Relations Task Force for York County. Melissa is also an active member in The Society of Human Resource Managers and the American Staffing Association as well as a host for an employment segment on the local cable station CN2.
Neil Whitman, CPC – Coastal Regional Director
Neil Whitman founded Dunhill Staffing Systems of Charleston in 2001. Under his leadership this franchised office ranked #1 nationally in perm placement revenue in 2004-2007. In 2007, the Charleston office received a Commitment to Excellence Award for their services in the temporary staffing division.
Dunhill has been named one of Charleston’s Roaring 20 Award winners 2008-2012. Prior to starting Dunhill, Whitman served as the Sr. VP of Quantum Resources and was VP and minority owner of Aide Inc., a Greenville- based technical staffing company. Whitman is a graduate of the University of South Florida and has been married for 36 years. He has three grown daughters including Katie, Dunhill’s EVP and minority partner. He is an active member of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, serving on the Board of Directors for FY2008. He is a member of Christ Our King Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant and has been a Eucharistic Minister for 8 years. He is a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 9475 and served as the Council’s Grand Knight from 2005 to 2006.
Debbie Varner is President and owner of Recruiting Solutions. She has been in the staffing business since 1992 and is currently focused on growing and developing the organizational team at Recruiting Solutions. Recruiting Solutions presently has offices serving both the upstate and midlands of South Carolina. Her background encompasses sales and marketing with a strong customer service culture.Debbie is active throughout our community. She currently serves on the membership committee for the Greenville Society of Human Resource Management, is a past member of the Workforce Investment Board for Greenville County, and is Vice President of the Anderson University Alumni Board. Debbie enjoys working for the United Way and currently is serving on the campaign cabinet for Greenville County this year. In addition, she works closely with the Chamber of Commerce and Greenville Area Development Corporation regarding economic development for the upstate. She is an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she has held various leadership roles.
